| Hi everybody, welcome to
newyorkLongboarder.com., a site dedicated to (obviously), Longboarding in NY/NJ
and the mid-Atlantic region (we'd love to hear also from our brethren in
Delaware, Maryland and Virginia). too
There is something special about us surfers, and within the sub
culture of surfers, there is something very special about us Longboarders. In
all our combined water time, we here have never seen longboarders in a
screaming match, or getting aggressive with each other. There is something about
the
boards we ride that make us generally a mellow bunch in the water. Maybe it's
because we get waves, lots and lots of waves.
We also have a special connection with the rich history
of our sport. We
want to know about it. Many of us were actually a part of it!! This is most
likely because the pioneers of our tribe were all longboarders. Stylists like
Miki Dora, Phil Edwards and Lance Carson, all longboarders. Original big wave
guys who tackled Waimaia, Makaha and Sunset, guys like Greg Noll and Pat
Curren, did it on longboards! We watch videos/dvd's from the 50's and 60's, and
appreciate the style from that era.
The 70's and 80's brought on the shortboard revolution,
a completely
different style of surfing. At this this time, quite a few of us switched to
shortboards (some of us even cut 3 feet off our boards and re-glassed them!!).
Some of us left the water, some of us did longboard straight through this
period, however, it was rare to see many of us, and very rare to see a
longboard in a surf shop.
The late 80's, we slowly started to see longboards in
surf shops, and in
the line up. By the early 90's, there had been an absolute renaissance in
longboarding. there were longboards popping up everywhere, in surf shops, out
in the line-up, we even had our own magazine! Modern technology and phenomenal
shapers made for a great variety of boards to choose from. Nose riders, for old
school style, or light, thin maneuverable boards, some even with 3 fins, for a
more modern style. During this renaissance, many of us
got back into longboarding, and it was
great to see guys in the water we hadn't seen in years. It was great to see all
the young guys getting into longboarding, some sticking to the traditional
style, some the modern, some guys creating a completely new style by combining
both. And the women! This renaissance brought an abundance of women to the
line-up. What a great sight it is to see one of our sisters taking off deeper
than everyone, and elegantly longboarding past all of us!
The early 90's led to the late 90's, and.....the new
millennium, and here
we are. We are established. We have travel locales strictly for us
longboarders.
Although we love the videos from the 50's and 60's, it's great to have dvd's
from this current period showing some phenomenal longboarding from around the
world. DVD;s of guys longboarding the Banzai Pipeline and getting deep!!.
We are young, old, male, female. We are in just about
every line-up at
every beach on east and west coasts.............AND, we are here in NEW YORK.
So, if you are someone who has been longboarding for
40+ years, someone
who switched to longboarding, someone who is is just getting into surfing and
sees longboarding as the way to go, or a shortboarder who enjoys taking out the
log every now and then........WELCOME!!
Guys and Gals, this is your site. It is going to be in
your home on your computer, please treat it with the respect that you would
treat any other piece of your equipment, because in reality, this is a piece of
your equipment. Surfing basically is: talking about when we're going surfing,
surfing itself, and talking about our last session, or about places we've been,
places we'd love to go, best wave we ever had, our perfect wave, our best
session, boards we'd love to have, thoughts on equipment, advice, questions, all
these different parts of surfing is what this site is
for. This site will be as great as you make it.
Please keep posts as positive and upbeat as possible. Please don't use someone's
question or opinion as club to beat them over the head with. If we have reason
to disagree, which of course from time to time we will, let's have respectful
debate. At times when we need to vent, feel free to do so, but let's
not live there. Finally, yes finally!! (hard to
believe that this started out as 2 paragraph welcome to the site intro). Thank
you so much for choosing to be a member of newyorkLongboarding.com, connecting
with fellow mid-atlantic longboarders, and NEW YORK/NEW JERSEY longboarders in
particular.
Feel free to write us for suggestions/improvements on the site
